The following review / case study describes my interactions with Ace Party Supplies & Showtime Concession. It is my own unique experience and I have no way to know if other people have had similar encounters with this company.

Challenge

For over 25 years, Ace Party Supplies (also known as Ace Party & Concession) has sold everything from birthday party decorations and party favors to candy and seasonal holiday decor. It operates a retail store that has been its primary location since 2017. 

Recently, owner Mara English realized wholesale concessions, which had been a staple of Ace’s in its early days, were coming back. Businesses with concession stands such as food trucks, football stadiums, theaters, churches, restaurants and schools all needed equipment and supplies. Mara decided the time was right to begin promoting this aspect of Ace’s business. 

Solution

Mara English contacted me, Susan Greene, a marketing copywriter, and hired me to write a sales letter telling concessionaires about the many products Ace had available for wholesale purchase. Here was her original request:

I replied to Mara and provided a quote for the work, which Mara immediately approved. She requested we set up a call.

I spoke at length with Mara two days later. The call was for us to get to know each other. It also gave me an opportunity to ask questions, learn about Ace’s business, and determine how best to present the information about concession supplies and equipment to prospective clients.

I would describe our call as a very pleasant and informative conversation. When done, I told Mara that I’d be sending her a draft of the letter within three days. I followed through on my commitment. 

Here’s the letter I wrote and submitted to Mara for approval:

Results / Review of Ace Party Supplies

Unfortunately, I am unable to report the results of this sales letter because Mara English of Ace Party Supplies & Concession is currently ghosting me. She has not paid the bill for my copywriting services. I therefore don’t know whether the letter, custom written for Ace, is accomplishing the client’s objective.

The bill was for the very reasonable, quoted amount. There were no additional or surprise charges. And I have offered numerous times to make any revisions to the letter if there is a problem with the copy.

Mara has promised on multiple occasions to send payment for the above letter, at first claiming she’d been out sick and then saying she’d been out of town at a trade show. It’s now been three months and counting. Despite multiple reminders via email and phone, she has never followed through and doesn’t answer my calls or emails. 

I published the letter above here on my website because I own it until Ace sends payment for it. I would certainly hope that Ace is not using the letter to generate revenue for itself. If they are using it, that makes their actions even more despicable as well as a case of copyright infringement.

If you are a copywriter, freelancer, or other vendor, I would highly discourage you from doing business with this company, or at least make sure to get payment in full before providing your products or services. 

Ace Party & Concession does not pay its bills and seemingly, owner Mara English has no conscience when it comes to paying vendors for their work. It’s disheartening to think that another small business, especially one that is woman-owned like mine, lacks ethical standards. C’mon ladies, we’re better than that!

As soon as Mara English pays the invoice, I will remove this page and transfer ownership of the letter I wrote to Ace. But otherwise, it is published here to warn other vendors and freelancers about the unethical business practices of Ace Party & Concession (aka Ace Party Supplies).
